Every so often, a piece of tech news drops that quietly changes what's possible. A team of researchers in London just delivered one of those moments — and we're still buzzing about it.

At University College London, Professor Polina Bayvel and her team sent a staggering 450 terabits of data per second through a pair of fibre-optic cables already running under the streets of London — from their lab in Bloomsbury out to a data centre in Canary Wharf and back.

That's 450,000,000,000,000 bits. Every second. Enough bandwidth to stream roughly 50 million movies at the exact same time. It's a world record.

But honestly? The headline number isn't even the most interesting part of the story.

The cables didn't change. The hardware did.

Here's the detail that had us grinning: the UCL team didn't lay a single new cable to hit that record. They used existing, commercially installed fibre — the same kind of fibre-optic glass that's already running past millions of homes right now.

The breakthrough came from smarter hardware at each end of the cable, which can pack about ten times more data into the same strands of glass. No digging up streets. No laying fresh infrastructure. Just better gear at the endpoints.

So what's this got to do with the Maritimes?

A lot, actually. Around half of Nova Scotia is connected by coax today — the cable network that's been serving the province for decades. It's a workhorse, and it handles just about everything most households throw at it right now. But our internet needs keep climbing. 4K and 8K streaming, cloud gaming, smart homes with dozens of connected devices, video calls on every screen, VR — the demands on a home network have quietly exploded over the past few years, and they're not slowing down.
